"Liz, can I ask you for a favor?" Regina Morrow said quietly, slipping up to Elizabeth, who had stopped at her locker between classes. Elizabeth pulled out her French book, then turned to face the other girl.

"Sure, Regina," she answered. "What is it?"

Regina glanced around uncomfortably. "Have you heard some of the things people are saying about me?" she asked. Her beautiful face looked unhappy and perplexed.

"As a matter of fact, I have," Elizabeth said truthfully. "But I know it's all complete nonsense."

Regina shook her head sadly. "Elizabeth, I have to talk to you," she said urgently. "What are you doing after school today?"

"Well—" Elizabeth took one look at the unhappy girl and decided that her "Eyes and Ears" column would have to be put off again. "Nothing," she said cheerfully. "What do you have in mind?"

"Would you come home with me after school?" Regina begged her. "Just for an hour or two. Oh, Liz, I need to talk to someone so badly!"

"Of course I'll come," Elizabeth assured her. "Why don't I meet you on the lawn after our last class gets out?"

"Liz, thank you so much," Regina said gratefully. She shook her head, and her long, dark hair moved gently from side to side. "Boy, you can sure tell who your real friends are at a time like this!" she exclaimed, smiling wryly past Elizabeth as Lila Fowler hurried by with her nose in the air.
